Any news on when jaiku is working properly again?

11 months, 3 weeks ago by hannamanna

  • jsaarikko

    Please, let us know.

These breaks are really annoying. The effect is almost the same as when your mobile phone connection is not working and you don't know why.

  • Kitti

Should we move to plan B? Twitter. C? Pownce D? Friendfeed or ?

11 months, 3 weeks ago by Kitti

  • jsaarikko

Does "free online service" mean "it works if it works" to Google?

@kitti: What would be feasible plan B?

11 months, 3 weeks ago by jsaarikko

  • myrtti

/me votes for identica - you can run it yourself and distribute with other OMB / laconica instances.

11 months, 3 weeks ago by myrtti

  • tulensrma

As was experienced during the Great Jaiku Outage of 2008, Twitter is not an option. Maybe Pownce or Friendfeed? Not too excited about either, I must admit...

11 months, 3 weeks ago by tulensrma

  • hannamanna

maybe we just have to move back to the old fashioned way of communicating in person? yup, not too pleased about these outages...

11 months, 3 weeks ago by hannamanna

  • mandrl

Or, we could set up laconi.ca. :)

11 months, 3 weeks ago by mandrl

  • spongefile

@tulensrma Then there's Brightkite, apparently unexplored so far? Otherwise Pownce beats FriendFeed for purposes of conversation, IMHO. Nice iPhone app, too. :)

  • alexleonard

Heh. It doesn't take much for people to abandon ship. Jaiku has felt pretty solid to me over the last while, but obviously something like Jaiku is akin to instant messaging - if your IM went down for a day you'd be pretty ticked off I guess.

I hope Google aren't just going to let Jaiku slowly fade out.

11 months, 3 weeks ago by alexleonard

  • myrtti

@alexleonard: I'd be happy if there were some sort of information given to us about what's wrong, is something being done to it, what's the estimated schedule etc. I've started to stray to other microblogging platforms already before these problems started, and I like how the community/main developers handle issues with identi.ca/laconi.ca.

11 months, 3 weeks ago by myrtti

  • njyo

I'll gladly stay at Jaiku, just that I'd prefer better notice if things don't work... :-S

11 months, 3 weeks ago by njyo

  • hannamanna

I'm not too quick to jump ship, just want to know what is going on and how long it's going to take them to fix it...

11 months, 3 weeks ago by hannamanna

  • cybette

they're working on it - here, here and here - but no eta for the fix (at least none that i came across)

11 months, 3 weeks ago by cybette

  • myrtti

@cybette: yes, but it would be lovely to have a central point for this information, and not have it in some $random persons Jaiku thread...

11 months, 3 weeks ago by myrtti

  • cybette

@myrtti: yes, but remember, they can't post new jaikus :P the blog would be a good place for this info but how many of us check the blog?

11 months, 3 weeks ago by cybette

  • jsaarikko

@alexleonard: It's difficult to change big part of your social network to another platform.

I love Jaiku and all it's features. I would hate to go, but there will be limits. Now it feels like someone's stretching them.

11 months, 3 weeks ago by jsaarikko

  • njyo

@cybette: I completely agree with myrtti. A clearly visible statement on Jaiku would already help a lot so we know what's going on. Ideally as well, while Jaiku is down, not only when things got resolved.

11 months, 3 weeks ago by njyo

  • cybette

@njyo: i just went with my first instinct and checked @jyri and the team's jaiku streams to see if they are aware of the problem. yes, it would be nice to have a statement somewhere, but where? people access jaiku by different means (e.g. mobile client) so homepage or blog might not always work.

11 months, 3 weeks ago by cybette

  • KevanV

I check the blogs if it isn't working... cos maybe I missed Jaiku had planned maint. But as usual there is nothing on the blog :/

11 months, 3 weeks ago by KevanV

  • myrtti

@cybette: and how many of the Jaiku users know to check @jyri or know the other members of the team? I came to scream in this thread immediately I noticed problems...

11 months, 3 weeks ago by myrtti

  • afr

i actually just installed brightkite on the iphone yesterday. looks really nice. a lot of interesting features, incl. threaded conversations.. :)

11 months, 3 weeks ago by afr

  • cybette

if you don't know the team, they are listed on the blog. just proves my point how many people actually read the blog. sure, maybe @jaiku is a better choice, then again, there's no one central point (this needs to be remedied). maybe now it is the FUCK thread since it's at the top of the explore page?

11 months, 3 weeks ago by cybette

  • cybette

@afr: i do like Brightkite too, just that the community isn't there yet (at least amongst my network of friends)

11 months, 3 weeks ago by cybette

11 months, 3 weeks ago by TheMyth

  • afr

ok, just installed the pownce app on the iphone... this must be a joke, right? the app has exactly one feature: create new message. wow. and m.pownce.com isn't much better it seems. wtf? i'm afr (pownce), and nondual (brightkite) btw.

brightkite is great, but the thing is it seems to be overkill. too many options and things going on. jaiku is simplicity in comparison. no need to "check-in" etc.

@afr: was just thinking the same while updating pownce

11 months, 3 weeks ago by hannamanna

11 months, 3 weeks ago by afr

I don't think I've ever had a spam comment on Jaiku - guess it's the invite only thing?

while everyone is in the mood to try new things, here is another http://nulaz.com . Found out about them at the weekend, and they are not closed (ie anyone can sign up ;) so head on over and grab your usual on-line names!

Been around for over 2years, similar features to Brightkite, but with a Java client for the phone (it is not "signed" so will keep asking for permission to use GPS unless you alter application permissions), and developed in Europe not US.

  • Cityrat59

So Jaiku's been down now again..... well Brightkite is a god alternative I think, I have tried both Rejaw and Kwippy when Jaiku was on the move. Rejaw is good but for me Brightkite is better!

    11 months, 3 weeks ago by Cityrat59

  • mandrl

Well, even if Jaiku suddenly dies - not likely - it's hard to just move to another site. As someone said, it's not about features but creatures.

11 months, 3 weeks ago by mandrl

  • afr

hmm.. rejaw looks interesting indeed. quite some of the familiar people over there..

11 months, 3 weeks ago by afr

  • alexleonard

Absolutely. I don't know about the likelihood of Jaiku dying - if Google did decide to close it down (and they're not fond of non-google-branded products) that would be the end of it. Jaiku wouldn't reappear as an independent again (I believe).

You're completely right about it being about creatures - I'd miss everyone I've gotten to know on Jaiku.

11 months, 3 weeks ago by alexleonard

  • gerrymoth

I actually quite like mobicue, but I don't know anyone who uses it? I'm on rejaw and identi.ca, oh and twitter as always :)

11 months, 3 weeks ago by gerrymoth

  • afr

cool, rejaw also does the IM thing: "Register your Google Talk / Jabber account, and receive real-time notification for shouts, whispers, replies, and followers. We'll add more IM services such as MSN or AIM in the near future.". and there's also an iphone app :)

11 months, 3 weeks ago by afr

  • hannamanna

I've been checking out Brightkite and Pownce but feel a bit lost, will take a while to figure them out since I'm so use to Jaiku

11 months, 3 weeks ago by hannamanna

  • alexleonard

Aye, brightkite seems like it's got a lot more features. I do love Jaiku for its simplicity.

11 months, 3 weeks ago by alexleonard

  • afr

aaaaand it has private messages..?? wow :) it looks like rejaw is pretty much = jaiku, minus feeds, plus PMs. ok, let's all move there! :D

11 months, 3 weeks ago by afr

  • shuopio

Jaiku does a good job in forcing the most active users to try out all the options. Any brightkite invites left? (jaiku-username at iki dot fi)

11 months, 3 weeks ago by shuopio

  • map

@cybette: Do you have Brightkite invite for me, too? I really don't want to leave Jaiku, but just in case... :-/

11 months, 3 weeks ago by afr

11 months, 3 weeks ago by hannamanna

  • afr

@alexleonard: true. i don't like that the actual message is the smallest part of a "shout" entry.. not very logical. jaiku is much better readable.. can you change that, please? ;)

11 months, 3 weeks ago by afr

  • cybette

things i don't like about rejaw: automatically closing threads (having the option will be nice); if i'm typing a new shout and the page refreshes, what i've typed disappears; no mobile client. unless there have been changes since i last checked it out.

11 months, 3 weeks ago by cybette

  • constantine

who are you all kidding, you're not going to switch just like twitter users don't swiitch. have fun playing in the new school yard, i'll be here when you come back.

11 months, 3 weeks ago by constantine

  • afr

@cybette: you mean the page does auto-refreshes while typing in a text box?? and what do you mean by "aut. closing threads"? btw, there's a mobile client for the iphone.. ;p

11 months, 3 weeks ago by afr

  • ymb

main "fail" for rejaw - no mobile client

@constantine But will Jaiku be here when you come back?

11 months, 3 weeks ago by gerrymoth

most, if not all, of my Finnish friends will be here and since i use this service to mainly talk with my meatspace friends who actually live near and interact with me on a regular basis i think i'll be OK.

  • alexleonard

I'm sad that I'm even looking at other services.

11 months, 3 weeks ago by alexleonard

  • afr

ah, i see. that's a really strange "feature".. (close after 2 days). also, there's no view where all the comments are visible among the shouts. huh? so if you don't explicitly open a shout, you will never see any comments of that shout, even if you are following the people who commented? makes not much sense to me. it's like jaiku with the "hide comments" option switched on. totally boring.

11 months, 3 weeks ago by afr

  • alexleonard

What makes Jaiku so useful is that it seems to cover a complete gamut of different ways of posting and receiving messages. You have IM, SMS, desktop apps, S60 app, a really good mobile site, um, and yeah, the site is really straightforward to use and follow what's going on.

11 months, 3 weeks ago by alexleonard

  • shuopio

    @cybette & @hannamanna: thanks!

11 months, 3 weeks ago by shuopio

  • alexleonard

Personally I find the IM bot the most useful, as I'm at the desktop most often. Next most often I use m.jaiku.com from opera mini (as I have no 3g in the area to use the s60 app). However, everyone has different ways of using it, and I'm not sure if another service will cover them all.

And I really like Jaiku. Come on guys, let us know what's going on :(

  • alexleonard

    Aye. I think I'm in love ;)

11 months, 3 weeks ago by alexleonard

  • shuopio

@hannamanna: I second that. I do not dump personal things like this very easily ;)

11 months, 3 weeks ago by shuopio

  • afr

i think we all would like to stay with jaiku, but messages like "yeah, looking into it, am on vacation and am having trouble getting access myself" don't sound very reassuring, don't they.. ;p

11 months, 3 weeks ago by afr

  • cybette

even with the glitch, my Jaiku stream is moving faster than those on Rejaw, Brightkite and Pownce. Shows that the community / creatures make a difference :) and the fact that Jaiku puts comments in the overview stream sets it apart from all the rest.

@afr: no it doesn't. we're faithful jaikuers but even our patience has a limit.

11 months, 3 weeks ago by cybette

  • afr

totally agree with the "comments in overview" argument. i haven't been aware of that before. i wonder why all the others don't/can't do that (?). ok, except for twitter, but that's probably because there are no threads anyway.. ahem..

11 months, 3 weeks ago by afr

  • arjw

@cybette: I agree; features do make a considerable difference. The integration that Jaiku has done (that others haven't as so much as copied completely) fits a lot of us pretty nicely. To have to move to another service-community, and not have all that same funcitonality is a bit much to ask.

Personally, of all those services that others have been speaking about, none really make me ancy for anything. At this point, I'd just as much prefer to take my mobile web server, and then have jaiku-like features (subscribing to others' mobi-sites and feed aggregration) pretty much be the next move. Another service to manage isn't exactly webby.

11 months, 3 weeks ago by arjw

  • alexleonard

That's what it is. No comments in overview - I was wondering what felt so wrong!
