@CarrollJones jaiku.com continues to be supported by volunteers who do it as a 20% project, and once it's open sourced, maybe somebody would be interested to also look at ways to do data export in case you decide to leave and take your bags with you.
Jeb, we're not pulling the service out from under the community. We'll open source the code after Jaiku.com has been moved to App Engine. If nobody needs the service, probably there won't be development. But if people want to use it and improve it, they have the opportunity to do both.
I had so much more in mind with google's purchase... Thought there was to be ties to android... S60 still being a big follower... I'm not a fan of twitter... I love using jaiku!
Once the GAE port will be finished and source code released, the volunteers Googlers will still be involved in the project and its development (ie still a 20% project) or just to keep jaiku.com running? :)
@morris: I think breaking the current state of status quo and going open source was the best news. To quote Jyri:
"While the future is uncertain (it always is), it’s also worth noting that the Jaiku that exists today was developed by independent people who were brought together by an interest to create a cool tool for sharing presence and conversation. "
@jocke: Snorkfia. Här försöker jag var lite trevlig på morgonen och mena på @jyri:s fortsatta närvaro i bubblan är den "bästa nyheten" och så skall du envisas med att vara seriös... Jag kommer åka förbi dit kontor och kittla dig. Fast bara lite.
I'm glad Jaiku is moving again. I hope a viable community around it will emerge to fulfill Jaiku's potential. One question - will the S60 client code also become open source?
@jeroen020 We're not yet ready to say if the S60 client code will be open sourced too. We're looking into it. We'll let you know when we're ready to announce.
The way TechCrunch is reporting it says that there will be no further development by Google. So you can take this news two ways, I guess. It's really a pity as I too much prefer Jaiku to Twitter.
@jyri - thanks for that! the original Symbian app was one of the most eye-opening experiences on mobile for me so if not the code at least the thinking behind it should be valuable for future development.
Jaiku is my favourite microblogging site so far, but it does need to get better (more integration with other social sites, for example). I think anyone pushing this a bit further would do the community great good. (And make me happy, as part of it I guess). :)
Good move! Keep up the good work!
What @ feature does Twitter have that Jaiku doesn't? @denny links to my posts here... I seem to recall Twitter was meant to do some kind of notifications when people use your username in a post, but it never seemed to actually work as far as I could tell. It's nowhere near as important here anyway, given that we have a sane reply feature! Although of course it would still be nice to know when someone you don't follow has name-checked you in one of their posts.

Any idea when migrating will be done and source code is released?

Later this spring.

I hope the community lasts till the Spring, I will try to hang in here. There's just nowhere better for community/people and nowhere else has strings.

@Jyri Glad to hear it. Please consider updating us every few weeks or month just so we still feel involved and have some idea of what's going on.

@JebBrillliant I'll do my best. Blog posts take a bit more time in a big org as they circulate around inside the org first.

I am staying hopeful for now

What license will Jaiku be releaded under? GPL, AGPL, BSD, MIT...?
10 months, 1 week ago by greggish
@greggish: under Apache License.
10 months, 1 week ago by sachaqs
@sachaqs I don't know. It depends on their interest level.
10 months, 1 week ago by jyri
The open sourcing of Jaiku presents the perfect opportunity for Google to show that it isn't afraid of the AGPL.
10 months, 1 week ago by greggish
@Jyri you can just Jaiku an update, no need for a blog post.
10 months, 1 week ago by JebBrilliant
@greggish The Apache License 2.0 to be precise.

@Jyri: I think this is a pretty good move, considering the state of things.
But one thing worries me. Will you be a part of the 20%-team? Will you have anything at all to do with the new an shiny open sourced jaiku?
(Some thoughts in swedish here: http://jardenberg.se/2009/01/15/jaiku-goes-open-source/ )

Interesting move. Albeit a bit late. But I guess Evan & the Laconica team will say thank you for some code samples....

ReTweeting my own Twitter message here since it's not going through to the Jaiku blog:
“Since Jaiku is now open source, all we need is somebody to implement Twitter’s @ and DM features to it and we’ll have the ultimate platform.”
