wow!... how bad... i was just wondering... will it ever be a brazilian number to send messeg to... becos sending messeges to the internacional number i've got is a lil bit expensive.
Thanks for the info. I thought it might be something like that. US Cellular here. Would some sort of email gateway work? Most phones can text messages to an email address. The email could then be picked up somehow by jaiku.. possibly? I currently do this with my drupal website.
If you get the activation message, you should also be able to send the message. The number should be given as
+467374960501
That is, the first character is the letter 'plus'.
Could you please tell us if it works? SMS is store-and-forward, but the message should be visible in a few minutes (usually something like 10-15 seconds).
Same thing here...have tried several times to activate my Sprint phone, but not receiving the message. Glad to hear I'm not the only one having trouble :)
OK, thanks for all the comments and keep them coming. It seems that at least Verizon and Sprint are blocking the traffic, or has any subscriber of either of those got any text messages from Jaiku? How about posting to Jaiku?
The evidence seems to be it may be a CDMA vs GSM issue. Verizon, Sprint and US Cellular are all on the CDMA network in the states. I've had problems before with traffic between CDMA and GSM carriers.
The permanent solution for the problem is the US short number, but we're working on interim ones.
I'd have one short number related question: We own the short number JAIKU, i.e. 52458, but what do you think, should we rarther get someting that is easier to remember as numbers like 54321 or 10101 or 22333?
Unfortunately, it takes some weeks to open the short code; this process is much slower in the US than in the rest of the world, because carriers want to evaluate the service after which they are enabled one-by-one. (That's why we working on an interim solution.) When the number is open, however, you can say goodbye to international TXT rates.
Hey Petteri I don't think you ought to invest in a new number, 52458 would be fine. I am also looking foreward to the Java app for my Blackberry. I think the app will make it alot easier to keep up to date (location @home). So far you have a very nice service.
Hi guys, we've had experience with our own mobile service and access to US networks. You're almost for sure having a GSM v CDMA/TDMA network issue. The explanation I got was that although the message gets delivered to their network there's no way to know if they actually send it through to the handset and there are no delivery reciepts back to tell you the status.
Instead of the hassle of a US shortcode there's another option we're trying which is to just get yourself a US GSM sim card from T-Mobile and have it hosted by your SMS provider, we haven't tried it out yet but in theory should work and give you access to all U.S. networks.
This is another royal PITA for us Verizon owners. We pay dearly for their blank-blank service... and to be shut out again on something else isn't making be feel so friendly towards them.
Sprint is CDMA so that is your problem rather than blocking, it's just incompatible with some European GSM services. Hang on in there I'm sure the Jaiku guys have a solution in the works.
A list of providers that are GSM and therefore should work in the US is below. Anything else no on the list i.e. Verizon Sprint etc are most likely CDMA/TDMA based and therefore not going to work.
Aerial (1900)
Ameritech Cellular Services
AT&T Wireless PCS, LLC
Bellsouth
Cincinnati Bell Wireless
Cingular Wireless
Eliska Wireless, Inc
Eliska Wireless Ventures
Nextel International (iDEN)
Pac Bell
PCS One Inc.
Powertel
Teleport Communications Group
T-Mobile USA, Inc
Could there be a way that we're given a code on the website, and we then have to text that code FROM our phone to Jaiku? Might be a workaround for Verizon users, like me... (don't know if the messages will go the other way...)
@chronodin I think it's the same both ways for them unfortuantly, messages from CDMA/TDMA networks won't make it back to their number, they'll never receive it.
I've been speaking with with Ericsson IPX our service provider every day this week to speed up the shortcode acquisition process. But (as I'm sure you all know, from your dealings with the operators), they're not the most.... agile of commercial entities.
Before the shortcode has been activated, we can manually confirm your phone numbers and after that you will be able to text updates to your stream by texting our international number at +467374960501.
If you can receive texts from our international number, then you can activate SMS notifications by texting ON. Text OFF to stop notifications. We'll add the SMS notifications checkbox on the Web under Settings -> Notifications shortly.
Thanks for your patience everyone - this is our top concern. Andrew will be on call to do activations manually while I keep working on the shortcode.
We don't have a good solution here yet - but we're working on it. Until we have a good one, here's what we can do.
If you're waiting on an activation message that never arrived, then email me - andrew@jaiku.com - with your cell number (as you provided it to us) and jaiiku username.
I'll manually 'fake' the activation process so you should be able to use the SMS functionality to at least post using SMS (but if your carrier's blocking messages from us, you still won't be able to get updates from your friends that way) while we wait for the carriers to activate the shortcode we've been trying to arrange for the last few months.
ThinkHammmer - the owners (and staff) use the service daily. We only use the jaiku account when we're talking on behalf of the company. If you'd rather hear from us more frequently, I'm sure that's something that can be arranged :)
SMS posting/receiving (not critical to me) is one area where Twitter is kickin' Jaiku's behind. I am a Verizon CDMA customer, and it just worked, from day one.
rjefferies - that's the downside of Jaiku being a non-US based company. Annoyingly, the US cellular networks seem to be remarkably insular. I'm based in New Zealand, and both Jaiku and Twitter SMS services worked for me straight off.
comment notifications are temporary disabled for threads with more than 10 people in them (while we work on a proper unsubscribe feature), they'll still show in your overview page though.
also, activations can now be texted in (won't show up in the ui in the welcome process though) just send the 4 letter code back to jaiku
I use Rogers, GSM based system, but I don't think that a text message is dependent on the protocol , ie. GSM or CDMA. I think it is that some carriers have different delivery times
I couldn't say. Twitter and direct phone to phone texts are VERY fast. Less than a minute for phone>twitter>phone. Less than 10 seconds for phone>phone
It's a complicated mess.. I know in the US.. CDMA and GSM carriers do not co-operate. That means throwing up walls till the courts tear them down. What happens in the rest of the world is a mystery to me. I do know that email seems to work everyplace.. perhaps an email gateway of same sort could fix all this? But, it would be a bit more work.. I have the luxury of having my own web site and can rss feeds to jaiku after email posting from my phone to my web site..
I think it has to do with spam blocking, I've requested Verizon allow Jaiku, but we should all do the same. At any rate, a work around may be to use your phones own email address to get updates to the phone. You'd do this by using the email address 5554449999@vzwpix.com (this is their MMS address, which supports larger messages than vtext.com which is purely sms). Now, why Jaiku can't just use the SMS gateway, I have no idea. Verizon and others have had this gateway in place for a long time.
I'm not receiving my activation message from Bell Canada. Is there any way around this? Also my phone appears to be unable to make a "+" character for SMS #'s.

Maybe it's only GSM friendly and the rest of us suffer?
Please, let it be fixed soon.

Also on Sprint and awaiting activation number.

I'd say if no one on Cingular or T-Mobile has had a problems, it must be a GSM v. TDMA/CDMA thing. Then again, I could be wrong.

Yeah, been trying for 2 days. Though I get SMS activation codes from other clients (LJ, Twitter, etc).

@danhendricks -- if you're paying $0.05 a pop, then why would you even want to bother with mobilizing Jaiku? I'd recommend getting on a TXTing plan.

I use Sprint and it works with a bunch of other SMS services. Have sent the Jaiku code twice and not received anything.
